Balance between Extra-Curricular Activities and Academics

Extra-curricular activities are a wonderful way of keeping kids physically active, making friends and also keeping them away from trouble.  If we look at the term Student Athlete, notice that the word student is first, it is not athlete student.  This is critical because as we break apart this title we know that academics come before the sport or activity.  Students should be required to maintain a certain GPA in order to participate in these activities, if the grades are not met, they should not be allowed to participate.  Balancing these two will prepare them for the real life expectations like playing in college athletics.

  1. I liked how you pointed out and broke down the word student athlete. I think people sometimes forget that both academics and sports make up the concept of student athlete. I agree that by having athletes maintain a GPA to participate gets them ready for the real world.

  2. I agree with you that extra-curricular activties are a good way to keep kids active and social in a positive way, rather than getting into trouble. I like the way you explained "Student Athelete"; I absolutely agree that academics should come before the extra-curricular activty. I also agree that students should be required to do well in school in order to participate in these activties but I do not know how these expectations will be set because GPA usually doesn't apply in elementary school.

  3. Thank you ladies for your comments! Heather I agree that GPA doesn't usually apply for elementary students, it fits MS and HS students more...What I should have said is, we should require all students to be at least an average level or beyond to participate. If their grades don't meet the requirement, then school should be deemed as a priority and participation in extracurricular activities should be placed on hold until they better their grades or improve. :)
